Veterans & ex-ADF: getting your head right after service

Heads up before you read on

This this articletalks about some heavy themes. It's honest, but it might be heavy going if you're having a rough day. If you'd rather talk to someone first: Lifeline 13 11 14 or more options.

Questions blokes ask

Do I need a DVA claim to get mental health help?

No. Open Arms (1800 011 046) is free counselling for anyone who's served even one day in the ADF, no claim or referral needed. And DVA funds mental health treatment for anyone who's served full-time regardless of whether the condition is service-related, ask about Non-Liability Health Care and the White Card. You do not have to wait for a claim to get help.

What is Open Arms and who can use it?

Open Arms (Veterans and Families Counselling) is a free, confidential, 24/7 service for current and ex-serving ADF members and their families, staffed by people who understand military life. One day of service qualifies you, and your family can ring even without you. Call 1800 011 046.

I only served a few years, can I still get help?

Absolutely. You don't need a deployment, a diagnosis or a war story. If you've served even one day, Open Arms (1800 011 046) is there for you and your family. Plenty of blokes who felt they didn't 'qualify' or weren't 'bad enough' have made that call and been glad they did.

Why is leaving the army so hard?

Because you lose four things at once: identity, structure, mateship and purpose, and civvie life rarely replaces them quickly. Lots of veterans describe the first year or two out as feeling lost or invisible. That's a normal reaction, not a weakness, and rebuilding routine, connection and purpose, with support, is how blokes find their feet again.

Where can veterans get help anonymously?

Safe Zone Support (1800 142 072) is free, completely anonymous and 24/7, with no identifying details recorded, good if you're not ready to put your name to anything. Open Arms (1800 011 046) is also confidential. If things ever feel unsafe, call Lifeline on 13 11 14 or 000.
